Synopsis:
Three years after his retirement, Sekiguchi Takayuki drops dead of a heart attack. His wife, Toshiko, meets her son Akiyukiâs wife for the first time, as they have been living in California and havenât had the chance to come back to Japan before now. Her daughter, Miho, is also on hand for the funeral. A cell phone rings somewhere in the house, and Toshiko realizes it is her husbandâs cell phone, in the pocket of his coat in the closet. She answers it and informs the caller that her husband has died suddenly, and the woman on the other end of the line, a Ms. Ito Akiko, suddenly sobs and hangs up. Toshikoâs husband made soba noodles as a hobby, and when his teacher stops by the house to offer his condolences, Toshiko mentions the wonderful soba he had brought back from last Thursdayâs lesson. The teacher is perplexed; he hasnât seen Takayuki for a long time. So where has he been going on Thursdays?

In conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Asahi Art Festival, seven community art project practitioners from Asia were invited to participate in a 9-day study tour in the Tohoku region. The study tour in August 2011 focused on efforts by the local community to rebuild the devastated region that was hit by an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown in March 2011.
Malaysian delegate, Lew Pik-Svonn, of Projek Chow Kit Kita will be sharing her experience and views on the study tour. Pik-Svonn will analyze these projects from the perspective of using art as a tool for community building.

4. Hanamas Tour
The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) is proud to present young & talented duo Hanamas live in Malaysia!
Chie Hanawa, who plays the tsugaru-shamisen, & Natsumi Okimasu, a violinist, joined together in 2009 to form Hanamas. Both of them, who are graduates from Tokyo University of the Arts, have been active in playing a variety of music genres. Within their pop sounds and melodies, Hanamas brings out the best from each of their instruments, and, at the same time, fuse them to create a harmony of Eastern and Western sensibilities. Having won the Prize for Encouragement at the 1st Neo Classical International Competition in 2010, they are definitely the duo to look out for, when it comes to fusions of great music!
